New Manchester United attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be one of the very highest earners at Old Trafford next season, with the Armenian set to pocket as much as £48m over the course of his four-year contract.
According to a report in Bild, by the time various add-ons are taken into account, United could pay Dortmund a total of £35m for the transfer. Then comes what the club will pay Mkhitaryan himself.
The report from Germany suggests that after taking a signing bonus of just under £7m, the 27-year-old will earn around £42m in basic wages thereafter. That is an annual salary of just under £10.5m, which boils down to a weekly pay packet of around £200,000 until 2020.
After Dortmund confirmed the sale of the player over the weekend, Mkhitaryan became United’s third major acquisition of the new Jose Mourinho era.
Six-time Armenian Player of the Year, he follows £31m Ivorian defender Eric Bailly and free agent capture Zlatan Ibrahimovic through the door at Old Trafford.
Juan Mata is already thought to be an early victim of the new arrivals. The Spaniard, who was sold to United by Mourinho while he was in charge at Chelsea, has been heavily linked with a £20m switch to a newly ambitious Everton.
Social media was also awash with rumours over the weekend that Ibrahimovic will be wearing the club’s number eight shirt in 2016/17, seemingly taking it from Mata who has occupied it ever since he became United’s club record signing in 2014.
